I have been a fan of General Hospital all of my life. I have been watching it as long as I can remember. My mom was a fan and we would watch together. Throughout college, and my adult life, I remained a loyal GH fan. As the soap industry starts to dwindle and fade, I am riveted once again to the halls of General Hospital and all the doctors, nurse and mob bosses that reside in Port Charles.
The 80's and 90's were probably the hey day of the soap industry. At one point in the late 90's I think I was DVR'ing at least four a day. I was an All My Children, Sunset Beach, Passions, One Life to Live, Another World, General Hospital and Days of Our Lives fan. Some I would watch every day, and some I would watch occasionally. As the shows started to be canceled one by one and disappeared from my tv screens, General Hospital remained at the top of my watch-list.

In April of 1963, General Hospital opened its doors. Over time the stories of the nurses and doctors that roamed the halls were at the forefront. These days, Carly Corinthos (Jax-Corinthos), Sonny, Jason, Sam, Michael run the show. Some of my favorites like Brenda and Jagger don't stop by as often as I would like. Favorites like Mac and Felicia are still calling Port Charles home. The love. The action. The violence. The stories are all an escape from reality, but they are the best escape you can find. Lets take a look at Sonny. I can't recall how many times he's been shot. He was paralyzed and regained the ability to walk. He has children with many of the women in town and yet he's one of the best fathers you will see on TV.
Recently the storylines have been so intense that I can't wait for it to upload to Hulu. Two years ago Jason Morgan returned to Port Charles. He was almost immediately injured and had to have reconstructive surgery on his face. He spent the next year trying to figure out who he was. DNA tests finally proved that he was Jason Morgan. He reunited with friends and family and remarried Sam. They even had a 2nd child together.
Now a new man, patient 6 has arrived in town claiming to be Jason Morgan. Thing is, he looks JUST LIKE old Jason. That's right, Steve Burton is back on the scene and reclaiming his role as Jason. There is a problem with that. I like Billy Miller. I've grown to like him as Jason. I like him with Sam. Now what am I supposed to do. I am torn between Jason's, much like Sam is. RIVETING TV!
In the early 90's I couldn't wait to get home to watch it each afternoon. In college, I would record it on VCR, remember those! As an adult, I would DVR and fast forward through the boring sections. Now, I exclusively watch it on Hulu. I watch it from start to finish and I am loving all of the story lines.
I hope they keep this up. I have proven after 42 years that is doesn't really matter, I'm going to watch GH until the end of my days. :) I tend to watch the day after once it is uploaded to Hulu. Sometimes, I will save up the whole week and watch it in day. It is the only one that I currently watch. I fell off of Days a while back. I just could take it anymore.
It makes me sad to see so few soaps on network TV. The Daytime Emmy's are not even broadcast on TV. Soap Opera digest is so thin that I had to remove it from my magazine subscription list. I realize that there a bunch of web based soaps, but I don't feel like searching them out. This is an entertainment source that I for one, am sad to see dying out.
As long as they air, I will following the lives and loves of my beloved Port Charles residents. Its my favorite part of any day when I start an episode up. Special note to Netflix or Hulu: I would absolutely watch this show from the beginning if you decided to put the whole series up. I have been dying to rewatch All My Childern and Another World.
What's your favorite soap and do you still watch every day? Do you save up a whole week and binge it all at once? Let me know if the comments below.
Until next time...
